The knee is the biggest joint in the human body, and it receives the most wear and tear. Because of this, knee conditions are among the most common in the USA. In fact, it is estimated that about 50 million Americans have been or will be diagnosed with some form of arthritis, most commonly in the knee.
Total Knee Replacement Procedure
Total knee replacement, or total knee arthroplasty, is a surgery that directly addresses a damaged knee. With the use of prosthetic components, patients benefit from a brand new knee that virtually eliminates any remnants of arthritis or other conditions. In an effort to deliver the best total knee replacement available, the surgeons at Gotham City Orthopedics in NJ and NYC are meticulous in ensuring your prosthetic is the highest quality available.
There are four basic steps of total knee replacement:
- Preparation of the bone begins with the removal of the damaged cartilage where the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) meet. A small amount of underlying bone is also removed, making room for the prosthetic components.
- The next step is the positioning of metal implants. The damaged cartilage and bone are replaced by metal components that recreate the joint surfaces. These components are typically cemented or “press-fitted” into the bone.
- The next step is to resurface the kneecap, which is not necessary in some cases.
- Finally, a medical-grade plastic spacer is inserted between the metal components, thereby creating a smooth, gliding surface.
Total Knee Replacement Recovery
After total knee arthroplasty, you may need to spend 3-5 days at an aftercare facility until you are cleared to go home. While recovering, you will need to undergo physical therapy, which is administered by our physical therapists at Gotham City Orthopedics. By looking after every aspect of your recovery process, we routinely deliver the best total knee replacement surgery in New Jersey and New York.
After your recovery, which usually takes about 4-6 weeks, you will regain much of your pre-op mobility. Higher impact activities, such as running, jogging, and jumping, are not recommended, whereas walking, swimming, and biking can typically be resumed. Your individual recommendations can be discussed with your surgeon. The key difference is that you will feel no more pain or discomfort.
