Sean Lager, MD, FAAOS
Dr. Lager is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who was fellowship trained in Sports Medicine. In 2012 he received his subspecialty certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery for Sports Medicine, joining a select number of distinguished Sports Medicine specialists in the United States.
Dr. Lager's interests include Arthroscopy and the management of sports-related and severe traumatic injuries for children and adults. His patients range from elite level and professional athletes to "weekend warriors." He treats anything from mild ankle sprains to complex, multi-fracture trauma.
Dr. Lager continues to perfect his surgical techniques and stay current with the latest technologies and routinely attends surgical workshops every year. He prefers arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques vs. open procedures for several reasons:
- Smaller incisions cause less trauma to tissue and produce less pain
- Surgeries are "same day" procedures
- Patients have quicker recoveries and can begin rehab faster
Dr. Lager completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore where he was a member of the medical staff for the Baltimore Ravens and served as the primary physician for several Division I college and high school teams. Since that time, he has been the head physician for the New Jersey All-Star High School Football team for 3 years, and continues to work with numerous local high school and college teams.

He is currently involved in research regarding concussions through the Hoboken University Family Practice Sports Medicine Fellowship and in 2010 he founded Cleared To Play.Org., Inc., a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization. Cleared To Play schedules and funds pre-season baseline ImPACT™ and Trazer™ tests for thousands of local high school and college athletes. Dr. Lager and Cleared To Play.Org, Inc. co-sponsored the first Annual Concussion Symposium which was held at the Best Buy Theatre in NYC in July 2014. Dr. Lager received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and earned his Bachelor of Arts Honors degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lager has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 2008 (Board Certified) and in March 2010 was elected to Fellowship of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He completed his Orthopedic residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
In order to keep abreast of the latest innovations and information, Dr. Lager routinely attends the annual meetings for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).
Dr. Lager was an Illinois high school state champion in swimming and soccer and competed at the NCAA Division I level, until he sustained a knee injury and underwent surgery. He currently is a member of the New York Road Runners club and completed the NYC Marathons in 2011 and 2013. Because of this, Dr. Lager understands how important it is for athletes to return to their sports as soon as possible. He personally experienced the anxiety, fear and pain of surgery and the demands of post-operative Physical Therapy. When asked why he became an Orthopedic Surgeon, he stated, "I had a negative experience as a patient, and while my surgeon was world-renowned, he never put me at ease or answered my questions thoroughly. I believed there was significant room for improvement and thought I could empathize with my patients' worries and symptoms." With this perspective firmly in mind with every patient, Dr. Lager has earned a reputation for being an outstanding Orthopedic surgeon.
